Why is Joseph’s tribe broken in two? Joseph received the “double portion” of the firstborn. The firstborn son traditionally received two shares of inheritance. But Reuben (Jacob’s actual firstborn) lost this privilege because of his sin (Genesis 35:22; 49:3–4). Jacob instead gives the double portion to Joseph; his firstborn by Rachel, the son he loved most, the son who saved the family during the famine.

By elevating Ephraim and Manasseh, Joseph receives two tribal territories, fulfilling the double portion custom.
